Kelly of Knitbrooks

Are you a knitter or crocheter that now has a business? I was so excited for this chat with Kelly of Knitbrooks. She is a knitter, crocheter, designer turned wood carver and crochet hook maker. Her gorgeous creations are inspired by nature and her beautiful surroundings and resemble the inner forest fairy that she is! I have admired Kelly for so long and was so glad to finally have this chat with her!

We talk business, Maker journey, and even discuss anti-racism in business. I hope you enjoy our chat!

With a background in photojournalism, knitting started as a hobby for Kelly as a way to wind down. She restarted knitting again in college, and as more and more knits began to pile up, she decided to start selling them on Etsy and has since sold her pattern designs and now has a booming hand carved crochet hook business!

Her brand is so beautiful and incorporates nature and the outdoors into it. Her photojournalism background helped her develop her brand style and she found that using the nature backgrounds really helped set her brand apart. She found it helpful to incorporate these things that she loved into her brand and it also helped her find more joy in the branding aspect of her business.

One of my favorite tips she had was that photos will make or break your shop. Your products can be amazing, but if the photos don’t represent it well, you won’t be able to make sales.

Being a small business owner is a roller coaster!

Kelly still works remotely part time, but her main focus is Knitbrooks. She says she’s still gone through phases of whether she wants to have it as something full-time, but likes to have something else to break up her day.

Her biggest tip on starting out as a maker in business:

“Accept that failure is going to be part of your process as a maker. Once you accept it, its easier to move forward!”
